Track 14 of the 52 songs project

lyrics

I saw her for the first time in the summer of ‘89
She was hanging out in the store with all the beautiful girls
Her body was all golden, unblemished but for one scar
And she called to me like a siren’s song

All the other girls disappeared from view I had eyes for her alone – I touched her neck and I fell in love with my ’74 Les Paul.

She was a gold top, a deluxe I didn’t have the cash, but I had the luck I asked him to hold her so I could hold her too
I scrimped and I saved, I borrowed I stole until she was mine and mine alone and my young heart was beating like a drum.

She and I became one, my first real guitar, she was the girl gonna make me a star
And I confess that I shared a bed with my 74 Les Paul

I flew back to Melbourne from the Colorado cold headed up the Hume to my country home and we hooked up with a real loud rock and roll band.
Then I married a seamstress with stars in her eyes, I was a pussywhipped long hair who drank all night and I couldn’t see the writing on the wall.

Those stars in her eyes they were just dollar signs and a shiny new sports car was all she desired.
The seamstress stole her away from me, my 74 Les Paul.

My golden girl you know she’d gone away and the songs I’d made with her died on that day
Although time’s a healer, the pain is always there.

And since that time, you know I’ve played around with all sorts of guitars in all sorts of crowds, colours and shapes and tones are blurred inside.
But true love’s first kiss is never denied and I sometimes still think of her late at night
My all American dream, my wailing sustaining queen my gold top deluxe as tough as a Mack Truck 74 Les Paul
