The day was cold and grey and all the worker ants they were pushing through
His voice was shredded like the lining of my old cheap wedding suit
He asked me for a dollar so he could get a feed, just a little something in his hour of need.
I shook my head and stumbled back in the swirling mass, no patron saint of hard luck men, I was something worse than that.

I walked along a pace or two and pulled up short just like I had been shot.
I saw myself in a flash, a swirling whirling feeling of being where he was
My hand went in my pocket and I turned around, I pushed my way back through the grey and took back my old ground.
He looked at me I looked at him I gave him what I had, I gave without attachment just two connected men
If you’ve got five give him two, don’t judge a man by the holes in his shoes.

He mumbled me a gratitude; a heartfelt note to thank me for the flow
I said if you were me and I was you, I’d reckon that you’d hoe the same row
He said he wasn’t sure,
Given all the pain a dollar held’s a dollar kept, it keeps the cold at bay.
I said fill the bucket of the man, give so you can get again.
